Kidepo Valley Safari Park

It is 1,442 sq kilometers and lays in the rocky semi-arid karamoja province valleys. This national park is in remote and with amazing scenery that can’t easily find in East Africa.

Game viewing in the park
Kidepo National park has got many wildlife species which include;Lesser Kudu, Grant Gazelle,Striped Hyena, and BeisaOryx,warthog, Rothschild giraffe,Elephant, burchell zebra, bush pig, cape buffalo,eland, bush buck, bush duskier, defassa water buck,bohor reed buck, jacksonhartebeest,oribi,lion, common zebra, leopard, Buffalo, several small cats,Kangoni, spotted hyena, black-backed jackal and side-striped jackal-commonly seen.

This national park has also got great diversity of animals’ species; it has over 80 species of mammals. Among the carnivore species in the park, there is striped hyena,bat-eared fox,huntingdog,the aardwolf, caracal, and cheetah. Kidepo National park is also rich in reptile fauna.
The oribis is abundant in the Narus Valley, despite the dry thron thickets in the north which is home to the Guenther DikDik Senegal Galago which is found in the rest camp at night and the white tailed Mongoose which can be view during the night game drive. You will also view the tree climbing lions while on the safari.

Kidepo national park is located in Karamoja province and it has a size of 1442 km. The park is semi desert scrub, open thorn scrub, its characterized with both long and short grass open trees, savannas, riparian woodland including the borassus and Kigelia woodland, thick , woodland, montane forest and the granite outcrops. There a number of bird species recorded in this park approximately 475 species.

There are also five species of primates which are found with in the park and some include;theKavirondo bush baby being endemic. Oribi is abundant in the Narus Valley, whilst the dry thorn thickets in the north are home to Guenther.

Scenery Viewing in Kidepo National park
The ultimate view of Kidepo national park. You can carry out hiking in this park for a few kilometers starting from its headquarters on the Lamoj Mountains.

The Borassue palm forest at kidepo valley that can be viewed by tourists and it has a wide flat bed which is dry for the majority of the year.

The main great attractions in Kidepo National park are the savannah and mountainous land scape in the park. The Narus Valley is also situated in the south west of the park. It’s also separated by the Natira and Lokayot hills from the Kidepo Valley in the north east of the park.

Also the LotukeiMountains in the south of Sudan mark north and the southern boundary of the park.

The amazing culture performance at the park
There is entertaining group of people around the park that provides with cultural performances for example the Larakaraka and Apriti dances of Acholi they perform avariaty of traditional dances like the Emuya of the Naporre and Nyangia. The money they get from these performances is used to improve on their welfare.

Nature walks
Follow the soroti- Morotoroad; you will also be enthralled by the view of the steep Alekilek volcano about midway Moroti and soroti.
Along the Lira Kotido road, you will enjoy the scenery of the labwor hills and in particular the massive and the bare Alerex rock which is about 55km to Kotido by the help of the knowledge on African culture that can be increased by a visit to the Karimanjong home steads locally called the manyattas and probably the kraals to view the traditional customs, stools, spears headdress, bows, knives and the arrows. You will also buy some of the items of the Karimajong traditional items from the park tourist office during the tour.

The hostel comprises of 14 bandas each of which has two beds, these bandas are not self-contained at $22 per person per night. The privately owned Apoka Rest Camp which is overlooking the Narus Valley has got 16 self-contained chalets/ rooms for $75 per person per night with full board. Camping services are also available but the tourists are encouraged to bring their equipment’s.

Accessibility By Road
1. From Kampala city via Soroti district to Kotido district then Amuria it is a 656 km drive.
2. From Kampala city via Mbale district to Soroti district via Moroto then Kidepo is a 792 km drive.
3. From Kampala city via Mbale district to Sironko district via Kotido district then kidepo is a 740 km drive.
4.From Kampala city to Lira district, Kotido city then Kidepo is a 705 km drive.
Note that a 4 wheel drive vehicle is also recommended during the tour; please you will also use a road from Kotido to Kabong which passes via Kanawauat. You can also have a domestic flight from Entebbe to Kidepo National Park.
