Golden Monkey Trek Tours in Volcanoes National Park – Rwanda Wildlife & Cultural Safaris
Golden monkey trekking in Rwanda is one of the most exciting primate experiences in Africa. The activity takes place in the famous Volcanoes National Park, located within the spectacular Virunga Mountain ranges in northwestern Rwanda.
This unforgettable Rwanda safari adventure gives visitors the rare opportunity to encounter the endangered golden monkeys, playful and energetic primates found only within the Virunga Conservation Area shared by Rwanda, Uganda, and the Democratic Republic of Congo.
Golden Monkey Trekking in Volcanoes National Park
Golden monkey trekking is conducted once daily in the morning. Visitors are required to report to the Kinigi park headquarters by 7:00 AM for registration and a briefing by park rangers before the trek begins.
The headquarters are located only a short drive from the park entrance, making access convenient for travelers staying around Musanze or nearby lodges.
After the briefing, trekkers are guided into the bamboo forests at the foot of Mount Sabyinyo in search of one of the habituated golden monkey troops.
Experience the Golden Monkeys of Rwanda
Golden monkeys are among the most beautiful and entertaining primates in Africa. These active and curious creatures are known for:
- Their playful behavior
- Bright golden-orange fur patches
- Fast movement through bamboo vegetation
- Social interactions within large family groups
Watching golden monkeys leap through bamboo stalks, chase one another, and feed on fresh bamboo shoots creates an unforgettable wildlife experience.
Unlike gorilla trekking, golden monkey trekking is relatively easy because the monkeys live on the lower slopes of the volcanoes in flatter bamboo forests.
Where Are Golden Monkeys Found?
Golden monkeys are endemic to the Virunga Mountains, which stretch across:
- Rwanda
- Uganda
- Democratic Republic of the Congo
Rwanda and Uganda are currently the only countries where tourists can trek and observe these endangered primates in their natural habitat.

Golden Monkey Troops in Rwanda
There are two habituated golden monkey troops available for trekking in Rwanda:
Sabyinyo Group
The most visited troop is located near Mount Sabyinyo and consists of approximately 80–100 monkeys.
Smaller Volcanoes Group
The second troop is smaller and found within another section of Volcanoes National Park.
Both groups offer excellent trekking experiences and close photographic opportunities.
Unique Characteristics of Golden Monkeys
Golden monkeys are part of the “Old World Monkey” family and are easily recognized by:
- Golden-yellow fur patches
- Bright reddish backs
- Distinct upward-facing nostrils
- Long tails and agile climbing skills
These rare primates are currently endangered due to habitat destruction and environmental pressures, making conservation efforts extremely important.
Is Golden Monkey Trekking Difficult?
Golden monkey trekking is considered one of the easier wildlife activities in Rwanda because:
- The terrain is relatively gentle
- The bamboo forests are located at lower altitudes
- Trekking times are usually shorter than gorilla trekking
Treks may last anywhere from 30 minutes to several hours, depending on the monkeys’ movement and location.
Unlike mountain gorillas, golden monkeys rarely move to high elevations, making the activity suitable for most fitness levels.
