Mount Elgon National Park, Uganda – Hiking & Safari Tours
Overview of Mount Elgon National Park
Mount Elgon National Park in eastern Uganda is home to one of Africa’s oldest and largest extinct volcanoes, estimated to have formed over 24 million years ago. Straddling the Uganda–Kenya border, Mount Elgon rises to 4,321 meters above sea level, making it the second-highest mountain in Uganda after the Rwenzori Mountains.
The mountain’s vast base stretches over 80 km in diameter, creating the largest volcanic base in the world. Its dramatic landscapes, rich biodiversity, and gentle trekking routes make it one of East Africa’s most rewarding hiking destinations.
The highest peak on the Ugandan side is Wagagai Peak (4,321m), surrounded by a massive 8 km-wide caldera, one of the largest in the world.
