Mountain Meru Trek and Hiking Tours | Tanzania Wildlife and Cultural Safaris
Mount Meru is one of Africa’s most rewarding trekking destinations and Tanzania’s second-highest mountain after Mount Kilimanjaro. Rising dramatically to 4,566 meters (14,980 ft), Mount Meru is a dormant stratovolcano located within Arusha National Park, approximately 70 kilometers west of Mount Kilimanjaro and east of the Great East African Rift Valley.
Often referred to as Kilimanjaro’s little-known brother, Mount Meru offers an extraordinary all-year-round hiking experience with breathtaking scenery, rich wildlife encounters, fewer crowds, and excellent acclimatization opportunities for climbers preparing for Kilimanjaro.
About Mount Meru
Mount Meru erupted dramatically over 7,800 years ago, creating the mountain’s distinctive horseshoe-shaped crater after its eastern flank collapsed during a massive volcanic explosion. The mountain last experienced a minor eruption in 1910.
Today, Mount Meru features:
- A massive volcanic caldera measuring approximately 3.5 kilometers wide
- Steep crater walls
- Dense mountain forests
- Rocky alpine terrain
- Spectacular summit ridges
- Panoramic views of Mount Kilimanjaro
Despite standing over 1,000 meters lower than Kilimanjaro, Mount Meru is considered one of Africa’s most scenic volcanic treks.
Wildlife on Mount Meru
One of the unique features of hiking Mount Meru is the opportunity to combine mountain trekking with a walking safari experience.

- Buffaloes
- Warthogs
- Giraffes
- Elephants
- Colobus monkeys
