Ol Pejeta Conservancy Wildlife Attractions and Activities – Kenya Wildlife Safaris and Cultural Tours
Ol Pejeta Conservancy is one of Africa’s leading wildlife conservation areas and among the top safari destinations in Kenya. Located in the foothills of majestic Mount Kenya in central Kenya’s Laikipia County, Ol Pejeta Conservancy is internationally recognized for protecting endangered wildlife, supporting local communities, and offering unforgettable safari experiences.
Spanning approximately 360 square kilometers, Ol Pejeta Conservancy lies on the Equator west of Nanyuki between the Aberdare Ranges and Mount Kenya. The conservancy combines wildlife conservation, chimpanzee rehabilitation, rhino protection, and sustainable tourism, making it one of the most unique wildlife reserves in East Africa.
Ol Pejeta is famously known as:
- The largest black rhino sanctuary in East Africa
- Home to the world’s last two northern white rhinos
- The only place in Kenya where visitors can see chimpanzees
Sweetwaters Chimpanzee Sanctuary
Sweetwaters Chimpanzee Sanctuary is the only chimpanzee sanctuary in Kenya and one of the conservancy’s biggest attractions.
Established in 1993 through a partnership between the Jane Goodall Institute, Kenya Wildlife Service, and Ol Pejeta Conservancy, the sanctuary was created to rescue and rehabilitate orphaned, abused, and confiscated chimpanzees from Central and West Africa.
The first rescued chimpanzees arrived from Burundi during the civil war in the 1990s. Since then, the sanctuary has continued rescuing chimpanzees from illegal wildlife trade and traumatic situations.
Today, the sanctuary provides lifelong care for dozens of rescued chimpanzees living within large natural enclosures separated by the Ewaso Nyiro River.
Visitors to Sweetwaters Chimpanzee Sanctuary can observe chimpanzees feeding, grooming, playing, and interacting in a safe and natural environment.
Northern White Rhinos at Ol Pejeta
Ol Pejeta Conservancy gained worldwide attention for becoming home to the last remaining northern white rhinos on Earth.
In 2009, four northern white rhinos were transferred from Dvůr Králové Zoo to Ol Pejeta in hopes that Kenya’s climate and grasslands would encourage breeding.
The rhinos included:
- Sudan
- Suni
- Najin
- Fatu
Although the species is now considered functionally extinct, Ol Pejeta continues supporting scientific efforts aimed at preserving northern white rhino genetics through advanced conservation technology and research.
The conservancy provides round-the-clock armed protection for the remaining rhinos.
