Southern National Park Tour and Travel Guide, South Sudan Wildlife and Cultural Safari Tours

Southern National Park in South Sudan is a paradise waiting to be explored. The diverse flora and fauna in Southern National Park, combined with its rich history and unique landscape, make it a must-visit destination for any nature lover.

Southern National Park describes itself as probably the best game reserve in South Sudan and offers the most magnificent and enchanting views compared to other parks. The Southern National Park has a variety of lush green vegetation, Savanah woodlands, beautiful landscapes that permit filming and also provide a warm habitat for animals like Hippos, kobs, giraffes, gazelles, and African dogs among other wildlife that tourists can sight only if their destination is South Sudan.

The swampy Southern National Park is brimming with wildlife, thanks to three rivers that drain here: Jur, Gel, and Ibba. These streams make the Southern National Park an ideal habitat for catfish, tilapias, bichirs, lungfish, and aba (a type of electric fish). Crocodiles are also spotted in the area. This national park has woodlands, forests, and grasslands where elephants, antelopes, buffalos, giraffes, lions, and hogs thrive. If lucky and patient, tourists might also chance upon white rhinoceroses, colobus monkeys, and galagos. In Sudan, going south means excitement.

Southern National Park is situated on an ironstone plateau in the south-west of the country, south of the town of Wau and west of Bor. The Park was established in 1939 and spans an area of 23,000 km2.  It is drained by three rivers: the Sue River to the west, a well-defined channel that joins the Nile; the Gel River to the east; and the Ibba River in the center of the park. The Gel and Ibba Rivers, after flowing through the park, form a flood plain which makes the habitat swampy.

The Park is thinly populated and visited by a few tourists making it a hidden gem waiting to be discovered.. Hunting, fishing, and honey collection are the common vocations of the people living in the park area.

Wildlife:

Southern National Park is just as diverse as its flora. The mammals found in the park include elephants, giant eland, waterbuck, kob, hartebeest, korrigum, African buffalo, Kordofan giraffe, oribi, northern white rhino, reedbuck, lion, colobus monkey, various galagos including the Senegal bushbaby, and giant forest hog. Visitors may also catch a glimpse of marabou storks and pelicans in some regions of the park

There are also about 100 species of fish in the Park's Rivers including Nile perch, Nile Leche, Tilapia, aba, Nile bichir, lungfish, and catfish among others.

Things to Do in Southern National Park:

Game drives in Southern National Park

The game drive is the quintessential savannah safari experience, and the Southern National Park contains several game trails. Traveling in four-wheel drive vehicles adapted to provide great visibility through hatch roofs and sliding windows, you will patrol the grasslands with your guide for about 3 hours in the early morning or late afternoon when the animals are at their most active.

Game drives can be difficult due to the dense vegetation that covers the Park, but booking with us will ensure that you have a knowledgeable guide who knows the best trails. The Park is home to a wide range of mammals, including elephants, buffaloes, and warthogs. Nocturnal game drives are an exciting opportunity to see nocturnal animals like leopards and hyenas.

Boat Cruise in Southern National Park

The Park is home to a wide range of animals and birds, and boat cruises are a popular way to explore the park. There are boat ride operators within the Park. During both cruises, you’ll likely spot birds, game, and crocodiles sunbathing on the side of the River banks.

Bird Watching:

With over 400 species of birds, Southern National Park is a birdwatcher's paradise and one of South Sudan’s best birding areas. If you’re a bird lover, I highly recommend taking a guided tour or exploring the area on your own to spot some of the park's rare and beautiful bird species.

Sport Fishing in Southern National Park

Another best thing to do in Southern National Park is sport fishing. Those who love fishing will get a once-in-a-lifetime experience catching one of the biggest freshwater fish, the Nile patch. There are 2 options for participating in sport fishing either by boat or standing from the shores/riverbank. We organize fishing safaris and assign you a guide who will be by your side for further assistance.

Community Visits in Southern National Park

In addition to its natural beauty and diverse wildlife, Southern National Park offers visitors the opportunity to experience the culture of the local communities. Visitors can visit nearby villages and interact with the locals, learning about their way of life and traditions.

Nature Walks in Southern National Park

Walking within the forests and savannas not only rewards the travelers with fresh breathing air but also an opportunity for bird watching, spotting, and learning about different plants and tree species and insects.

This is another way of killing stress and stretching legs that leaves you with jungle memories hence one of the best things to do in Southern National Park. The rewards of nature walks are more experienced than said.

Best time to Visit:

Southern National Park can be visited all year round, however, the prime time to see wildlife in Southern National Park is during the Dry season (September to March).
