ABOUT THE TURKANA PEOPLE OF KENYA
The Turkana are one of the largest nomadic communities in Kenya, primarily living in Turkana and Marsabit counties in the Rift Valley region.
They are part of the Nilotic ethnic group and represent the third largest pastoralist community in Kenya, after the Kalenjin and Luo, and slightly more numerous than the Maasai.
Their language, also called Turkana, belongs to the Eastern Nilotic language group.
HISTORY & ORIGIN OF THE TURKANA PEOPLE
Oral traditions trace the Turkana origins to the Karamoja region of northeastern Uganda. According to legend, they migrated into Kenya while chasing a disobedient bull.
Historically, the Turkana entered the Turkana Basin as part of the Ateker Confederation, later separating due to internal divisions and forming distinct communities.
Over time, the Turkana emerged as a strong and independent group, developing powerful pastoral traditions and expanding across Northern Kenya.

NOMADIC LIFESTYLE & SETTLEMENTS
The Turkana are semi-nomadic pastoralists, moving frequently in search of water and pasture.
Lifestyle Characteristics
- No permanent settlements
- Seasonal movement with livestock
- Grazing in plains and mountain foothills
- Strong adaptation to arid desert conditions
Livestock is moved strategically to areas where vegetation lasts longer, ensuring survival in harsh environments.
LIVESTOCK CULTURE OF THE TURKANA
Livestock is the foundation of Turkana life and economy.
Animals Kept
- Camels
- Goats
- Zebu cattle
- Donkeys
Livestock Uses
- Milk, meat, and blood consumption
- Trade and bridewealth
- Ritual and cultural ceremonies
- Transport and mobility (camels)
Camels are especially important for survival in desert conditions and are highly valued in social and economic exchanges.
TURKANA WAY OF LIFE & CULTURE
Unlike highly structured societies, Turkana communities are organized around family-based social units called “Awi.”
Awi Structure
- Extended family unit (20–25 people on average)
- Polygamous family systems
- Livestock ownership managed by the household head
- Women receive livestock based on status
Cultural Identity
- Bright beadwork and jewelry (especially women)
- Dyed hairstyles and body decoration
- Wooden stools (“Ekicholong”) used for seating and rituals
- Skilled craftsmanship in wood, stone, and metal
Turkana people are also known for their strong artistic expression through jewelry, weapon-making, and carving.

FOOD & DAILY LIFE
The Turkana rely heavily on livestock products and natural resources:
- Milk, meat, and blood from animals
- Wild fruits collected by women
- Slow-cooked traditional foods
- Roasted goat meat (preferred preparation method)
Meals reflect a deep connection between people, animals, and the environment.
RELIGION & BELIEFS
The Turkana practice a traditional African belief system centered on spirituality and ancestral forces.
Key Beliefs
- Supreme God: Akuj (sky deity)
- Ancestors (Ekipe) influence daily life
- Rituals performed during droughts and crises
- Spiritual healers known as Ngimurok
Ngimurok act as intermediaries between the spiritual and physical world, helping communities resolve problems and seek protection.
