About Mount Longonot
The name “Longonot” originates from the Maasai word “Oloonong’ot,” meaning “mountains of many summits” or “steep ridges.”
Mount Longonot was formed through massive volcanic eruptions approximately 21,000 years ago, creating a huge caldera measuring about 8 x 12 kilometers. A newer volcanic cone later developed within the caldera and is now capped by a spectacular crater approximately 1.8 kilometers wide.
The mountain is believed to have last erupted in the 1860s and remains one of Kenya’s most impressive volcanic landscapes.
One of the most unique features of Mount Longonot is the thick forest growing inside the crater, creating a thriving ecosystem hidden within the volcano.
