3. Amahoro Gorilla Family
Known as the most peaceful group, Amahoro is led by silverback Ubumwe. Despite its calm nature, trekking to this family can be strenuous due to its high elevation.
4. Hirwa Gorilla Family
“Hirwa,” meaning “the lucky one,” was formed from members of different groups, including Susa and Sabyinyo. This family often moves across the Virunga Massif, including areas near Mount Sabyinyo and neighboring parks such as Mgahinga Gorilla National Park and Virunga National Park

5. Agashya (Group 13) Gorilla Family
Originally known as Group 13, this family grew from 13 members to over 27 under the leadership of silverback Agashya. The group is commonly found along the slopes of Mount Sabyinyo.
6. Sabyinyo Gorilla Family
This group is one of the easiest to trek, located near the park headquarters. Led by one of the largest silverbacks, the Sabyinyo family is ideal for those seeking a less strenuous trek.
7. Bwenge Gorilla Family
Led by silverback Bwenge (“wisdom”), this group has about 11 members. It typically inhabits the slopes of Mount Bisoke and is considered moderately easy to track.
8. Ugenda Gorilla Family
The name “Ugenda” means “mobile,” reflecting the group’s constantly changing location. Found around Mount Karisimbi and Mount Bisoke, this trek can vary from moderate to challenging.

9. Titus Gorilla Family
Named after Titus, a poaching survivor during the time of Dian Fossey, this family has a remarkable story of resilience. It roams between Mount Karisimbi and Mount Bisoke.
10. Umubano Gorilla Family
“Umubano” means togetherness. This group split from Amahoro after leadership conflicts and is led by silverback Charles. It shares territory close to Amahoro.
11. Kwitonda Gorilla Family
Originally from Virunga National Park, this family migrated to Rwanda and settled near Mount Muhabura. Kwitonda, meaning “the humble one,” leads the group.
12. Muhoza Gorilla Family
One of the newest families, Muhoza has about 12 members and is among the easiest to trek, often found on lower slopes.
