Safari Tour To Karera Waterfalls in Burundi | Top Tourist Attractions in Burundi

Chutes de la Karera Falls are some of the most fascinating and awe-inspiring natural landmarks in Burundi where a river abruptly changes its elevation. The Karera Waterfalls immerse deep into the forest with gigantic trees that are stunning to observe as they flow via different paths on six branches and three levels.

All the falls have many various smaller cascades. Near the falls, you will find dense forest vegetation which makes the realm look very beautiful to all or any forms of travelers both local and international.

Also known as Kagera Falls or Chutes de la Karera are a spectacular series of waterfalls in southeastern Burundi. They are located to the south of Rutana. The falls occupy over 142 hectares, being made up of six branches divided into three landings.

On the first level, is a main fall subdivided into two parallel branches of a length estimated at 80 m about which pours on a basin. This fall consists of several waterfalls of different sizes intersected with two platforms. Another smaller waterfall is located roughly 50 m to the west of this main fall. The waters of these two falls converge on a second landing to form the third waterfall which pours into the valley.

There are four falls in the Karera River, swelled by a branch from the Mwaro River coming in from the west. The latter parallels with the second on Karera River and together form, downstream, the fourth which is the strongest of all the falls. Two upper cascades are formed on two separate tributaries – the Karera stream itself and its smaller tributary Mwaro.

The third cascade forms on the Karera stream after the confluence with Mwaro. Each of these cascades consists of numerous smaller cascades. The prettiest is the cascade Nyakai I where you park your car. Upstream from this is the smallest of the four falls, Nyakai II, an ideal spot for an impromptu shower. This watercourse is joined by that of Mwaro Falls before creating the namesake and tallest waterfall in the area, Karera Falls.

The fifth completes its spectacular descent to give way to a river which first runs initially in small cascades and then slowly at the bottom of the valley, through a forest gallery, which leads to the Muyovozi River and the Malagarazi which is thrown finally into Lake Tanganyika after a long course until Kigoma in Tanzania

Karera Falls is blessed with exotic waters believed to have healing powers that act as a soothing medication for the body. The natural forest reserves of Mugara, Kigwena, and Roumonge are rich in such thermal falls. The nearby beach of Tanganyika is an added pleasure spot for travelers to relax and swim.

Along the falls grows dense gallery forest and the general scenery of this area is beautiful. The site is a beloved tourist destination both for locals and infrequent foreign guests. Many bird species can be seen in the areas around the falls.

The fall nearest to the car parking area is the prettiest but this should not stop you from walking around and seeing the others. Walking upstream is possible and a quick shower to cool off is possible in the smallest of the four waterfalls. The tallest waterfall and the area's namesake is the Karera Fall which is especially fearsome in the height of the wet season.

The falls are at their best during the wet season (especially from October to January). The falls are 64km south of Gitega, but as there are no public transport options to the falls, a visit needs to be arranged by a chartered vehicle, as part of a tour, or of course self-drive is an option.
