Boyoma Falls & Wagenya Fishermen | DR Congo Wildlife & Cultural Safari Tours
Discover Boyoma Falls – Africa’s Most Powerful Waterfalls
Located in the central Democratic Republic of the Congo, Boyoma Falls (formerly known as Stanley Falls) is one of Africa’s most spectacular natural wonders. Unlike typical vertical waterfalls, Boyoma is a dramatic series of seven powerful rapids stretching over 100 km along the Lualaba River.
With an incredible annual flow rate, Boyoma Falls is considered the most powerful waterfall system in the world by volume, surpassing even Niagara Falls and Iguazu Falls.
Location & Geography
Boyoma Falls lies between the towns of:
- Ubundu
- Kisangani (formerly Boyoma)
At the end of these rapids, the Lualaba River officially becomes the mighty Congo River.
Key Features:
- Width: Approximately 4,500 feet
- Total drop: 61 meters (200 ft)
- Flow rate: Around 17 million liters per second
- Series of 7 cataracts/rapids
A Historical Landmark
Boyoma Falls gained global recognition during the 19th century when explorer Henry Morton Stanley encountered the falls during his expedition along the Congo River. He named them Stanley Falls, a name that remained for decades before reverting to its indigenous identity.
Meet the Wagenya Fishermen
One of the most fascinating highlights of visiting Boyoma Falls is experiencing the culture of the Wagenya (Wagenia) people, who live along the rapids.
Unique Fishing Tradition
The Wagenya are famous for their ancient fishing techniques, which include:
- Constructing wooden scaffolding over powerful rapids
- Using large cone-shaped baskets to trap fish
- Passing down knowledge through generations
These methods are uniquely adapted to the fast-flowing and turbulent waters of the falls, making this one of the most extraordinary cultural experiences in Africa.
